Research and Advocacy for Agroecology (R&A) Project

The Research and Advocacy for Agroecology (R&A) Project is an ongoing initiative implemented by the Tanzania Organic Agriculture Movement (TOAM) with support from Swissaid. The project aims to strengthen the case for agroecology (AE) in Tanzania through a combination of scientific research and evidence-based advocacy. It collaborates with local and international research institutions including Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA) and ETH Zurich, and aligns closely with the broader Ecological Organic Agriculture Initiative (EOA-I). The overall objective is to mainstream agroecology/ecological organic agriculture (AE/EOA) into Tanzania’s agricultural policies, plans, and practices by leveraging knowledge from field research and using it for strategic advocacy and awareness-raising.

Key Outcomes:

Outcome 1: Policy Advancement and Stakeholder Engagement

The project contributes to national policy processes such as the National Ecological Organic Agriculture Strategy (NEOAS) 2022–2030 by supporting technical teams, organizing stakeholder engagements, and lobbying for AE/EOA inclusion in key national documents like the District Agricultural Development Plans (DADPs), the Agricultural Sector Development Plan III, and the Seed Act.

Outcome 2: Increased Adoption and Awareness of Agroecology

Through collaboration with local media (TV, radio, newspapers, and social media), the project amplifies awareness and public support for agroecology. It also promotes Farmers’ Managed Seed Systems (FMSS) and indigenous seed sovereignty, which has influenced national discussions and recognition by institutions such as the Tanzania Agricultural Research Institute (TARI). Generally, the research and advocacy project plays a crucial role in bridging science and policy by using locally grounded research to inform decision-making and public discourse on sustainable agriculture. Through strategic partnerships, media engagement, and national policy influence, the project advances the visibility, acceptance, and integration of agroecology as a viable approach to food security, climate resilience, and biodiversity protection in Tanzania.

TOAM promotes and supports market access for organic commodities to premium market outlets. This involves the establishment of connections between suppliers and consumers, encouraging aggregation of smallholder producers and processors to meet market demand requirements and economies of scale. TOAM takes custodianship of branding and certification ensuring visibility, recognition, and credibility of organic commodities in the market
